A building-based data capture and data mining technique for air quality assessment

Ni SHENG, U Wa TANG

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2011, Volume 5, Issue 4,   Pages 543-551 doi: 10.1007/s11783-011-0369-4

Abstract: Recently, a building-based air quality model system which can predict air quality in front of individual buildings along both sides of a road has been developed. Using the Macau Peninsula as a case study, this paper shows the advantages of building-based model system in data capture and data mining. Compared with the traditional grid-based model systems with input/output spatial resolutions of 1–2 km, the building-based approach can extract the street configuration and traffic data building by building and therefore, can capture the complex spatial variation of traffic emission, urban geometry, and air pollution. The non-homogeneous distribution of air pollution in the Macau Peninsula was modeled in a high-spatial resolution of 319 receptors·km . The spatial relationship among air quality, traffic flow, and urban geometry in the historic urban area is investigated. The study shows that the building-based approach may open an innovative methodology in data mining of urban spatial data for environmental assessment. The results are particularly useful to urban planners when they need to consider the influences of urban form on street environment.

BMP decision support system for evaluating stormwater management alternatives

Mow-Soung CHENG, Jenny X. ZHEN, Leslie SHOEMAKER,

Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering 2009, Volume 3, Issue 4,   Pages 453-463 doi: 10.1007/s11783-009-0153-x

Abstract: Prince George’s County, Maryland, in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area has developed a best management practice decision support system (BMPDSS) to support analysis and decision making for stormwater management planning and design at both the site scale and the watershed levels. This paper presents a detailed description of the BMPDSS. A case study that demonstrates the application of the system is also included. The case study involves a Green Highway project located in a highly urbanized area within the Anacostia River watershed of the county. Several best management practices (BMP) such as bioretention, filter vegetative swale, porous paving, and landscape infiltration are proposed for reducing highway runoff and improving water quality. The BMPDSS is used to identify and evaluate various alternatives to determine the most cost-effective types and combinations of BMPs that minimize the highway runoff pollution.

Frontiers of Agricultural Science and Engineering 2014, Volume 1, Issue 3,   Pages 223-235 doi: 10.15302/J-FASE-2014025

Abstract: Wheat stripe rust caused by f. sp. occurs widely in China and seriously affects wheat production. Global warming could profoundly impact the incidence and prevalence of low-temperature diseases such as stripe rust. Studies on the effects of temperature on the distribution of overwintering stripe rust could help us understand the incidence and prevalence of the disease and could also provide support for monitoring, forecasting and developing control strategies. An exponential model and a spherical model of the ordinary Kriging method in the ArcGIS platform were used to predict the overwintering regions of stripe rust based on the probability that the average temperature of the coldest month from December to February was higher than -6 or -7°C from 2001 to 2012. The results showed that the areas with a probability between 70% and 90% were transition regions for the overwintering of stripe rust. Based on annual mean temperature of the coldest month from December to February for 2001 to 2012, overwintering distribution of stripe rust was likewise evaluated. The boundary for overwintering of stripe rust was consistent with the areas where the probability was predicted to be 70% to 90% for the overwintering distribution of stripe rust, but the boundary was shifted northward toward Beijing in North China. Some areas in Xinjiang, including Akto, Pishan, Hotan and Yutian, were also predicted to be suitable for the overwintering of stripe rust.

A Comparison of SWAT Model Calibration Techniquesfor Hydrological Modeling in the Ganga River Watershed

Engineering 2018, Volume 4, Issue 5,   Pages 643-652 doi: 10.1016/j.eng.2018.08.012

Abstract:

The Ganga River, the longest river in India, is stressed by extreme anthropogenic activity and climate change, particularly in the Varanasi region. Anticipated climate changes and an expanding populace are expected to further impede the efficient use of water. In this study, hydrological modeling was applied to Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) modeling in the Ganga catchment, over a region of 15 621.612 km2 in the southern part of Uttar Pradesh. The primary goals of this study are: To test the execution and applicability of the SWAT model in anticipating runoff and sediment yield; and to compare and determine the best calibration algorithm among three popular algorithmssequential uncertainty fitting version 2 (SUFI-2), the generalized likelihood uncertainty estimation (GLUE), and parallel solution (ParaSol). The input data used in the SWAT were the Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) digital elevation model (DEM), Landsat-8 satellite imagery, soil data, and daily meteorological data. The watershed of the study area was delineated into 46 sub-watersheds, and a land use/land cover (LULC) map and soil map were used to create hydrological response units (HRUs). Models utilizing SUFI-2, GLUE, and ParaSol methods were constructed, and these algorithms were compared based on five categories: their objective functions, the concepts used, their performances, the values of P-factors, and the values of R-factors. As a result, it was observed that SUFI-2 is a better performer than the other two algorithms for use in calibrating Indian watersheds, as this method requires fewer runs for a computational model and yields the best results among the three algorithms. ParaSol is the worst performer among the three algorithms. After calibrating using SUFI-2, five parameters including the effective channel hydraulic conductivity (CH_K2), the universal soil-loss equation (USLE) support parameter (USLE_P), Manning’s n value for the main channel (CH_N2), the surface runoff lag time (SURLAG), and the available water capacity of the soil layer (SOL_AWC) were observed to be the most sensitive parameters for modeling the present watershed. It was also found that the maximum runoff occurred in sub-watershed number 40 (SW#40), while the maximum sediment yield was 50 t·a−1 for SW#36, which comprised barren land. The average evapotranspiration for the basin was 411.55 mm·a−1. The calibrated model can be utilized in future to facilitate investigation of the impacts of LULC, climate change, and soil erosion.

Zhong Denghua,Zhu Huirong,Zheng Jiaxiang

Strategic Study of CAE 2003, Volume 5, Issue 11,   Pages 65-70

Abstract:

Xiluodu hydroelectric plant is the biggest plant to be built on Jinsha River, and also, Xiluodu project is the biggest hydraulic engineering in China except Three George Project. To intuitively and accurately describe the complex and dynamic spatial relationship among all sides interfered in construction layout design of Xi Luodu project, the construction layout system is divided into 6 subsystems: dam construction, diversion and enclosure construction, dynamic water flow, underground structure construction, quarry stacking and redigging, and road and traffic inside construction site, and the research on 3D dynamic visual graphic simulation for construction layout of the designed whole construction process is developed. Flow of the 3D dynamic graphic simulation data is designed. Dynamic graphic simulation data can be divided into graphic data and attribute data, which organized based on GIS, then, 3D dynamic visual digital model for construction layout is built, which itself is an important part of digital hydraulic engineering. 3D dynamic visual graphic simulation demonstration and visual inquiry of dynamic graphic simulation data are realized with this digital model. Practical engineering application shows that a scientific and intuitive visualization analysis way is provided. for construction layout design and decision-making by this research, moreover, hydroelectric design work will be promoted to develop in an intellective and modern way, and the research is worth to be spread.

Frontiers of Information Technology & Electronic Engineering 2017, Volume 18, Issue 10,   Pages 1543-1555 doi: 10.1631/FITEE.1600043

Abstract: We consider the problem of finding map regions that best match query keywords. This region search problem can be applied in many practical scenarios such as shopping recommendation, searching for tourist attractions, and collision region detection for wireless sensor networks. While conventional map search retrieves isolate locations in a map, users frequently attempt to find regions of interest instead, e.g., detecting regions having too many wireless sensors to avoid collision, or finding shopping areas featuring various merchandise or tourist attractions of different styles. Finding regions of interest in a map is a non-trivial problem and retrieving regions of arbitrary shapes poses particular challenges. In this paper, we present a novel region search algorithm, dense region search (DRS), and its extensions, to find regions of interest by estimating the density of locations containing the query keywords in the region. Experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithm.
